Usually, if you lose a password, you may click a "forgot password" link and follow a series of instructions to recover or reset your account's password. Unfortunately, this is not a possibility with desktop applications or password-protected files. Passware Kit Standard can help you recover your passwords. It comes with several modules, for recovering passwords from popular programs, like MS Outlook or Word, for decrypting PDF files and archives and more.

Passware Kit Standard is free to try, with some limitations. It can be installed in a few moments, without making any complex settings. The application provides support for all popular Windows versions and it doesn't ask for powerful hardware or additional tools.

The first thing you need to know is that Passware Kit Standard is designed specifically for recovering lost passwords and that it can not be used to crack another user's account. The application's user interface has a simple design and it presents only a small number of options. You can recover passwords from protected files, as well as passwords from mail clients, websites or network connections. The available options are well organized, so you can find what you need without any effort.

The application places several recovery methods at your disposal, for password-protected files. You can choose to follow a wizard's instructions, use predefined settings, with default attacks or you can customize your own advanced attack. The aforementioned wizard will ask you a series of questions about your password. In this case, you have to specify if the password is a simple or composed word from a dictionary, if it's combined with random letters, numbers or symbols or if it is not from a dictionary, but similar to a word. Depending on your selection, the wizard may ask for additional input, like patterns, if the password contains upper or lower characters and so on.

To decrypt a file, Passware Kit Standard will try numerous words, one by one, according to your specifications. Obviously, the more specifications you make, the less time it will take to recover your password. Alternatively, you can specify that you don't know anything about the password, but it will take longer to decrypt the targeted file.

Besides passwords for local files, Passware Kit Standard can also recover passwords from mail clients, web accounts and network connections. Of course, you can't recover passwords for any accounts. The application will look for the passwords in a program's files. In other words, you can recover a password for a web account only if it was saved by Internet Explorer.

Creating a Windows password reset disk is another possibility. The reset disk can be quite useful if you get locked out of your Windows account, because you forgot your password. Another useful feature is the possibility of scanning for protected files. If you have one or more password-protected documents on your hard disk, the application can find them, after which you may attempt to recover their passwords.

Pros

You can recover passwords for locked files, mail clients, web accounts and more. The application places several recovery modules at your disposal and it uses various attack algorithms. The available options are well organized and easy to understand.

Cons

Passwords are recovered partially or completely while using the trial version. Passware Kit Standard can help you avoid unpleasant situations, if you can't remember the password for a protected file or an account.
